First One I Have Seen In Several Years

This morning I was out doing some yard work when I noticed this beauty out enjoying some sunshine. I quickly put Chancy in the other fenced area of the yard so he would not chase it away or catch it…he is fast and I did not want to take a chance. These snakes keep rats and mice away and I never want to cause harm to them. Some people keep them as pets but I would never do that…in my opinion they were not meant to be pets. I welcome them to keep the rats and mice away from my place. They are a link in the food chain of life and we need them.Ā  http://www.herpsofarkansas.com/Snake/LampropeltisHolbrooki

  1. OH that IS a fine looking snake. I haven’t seen any here at all since my middle boy was about 2! Quite a while ago.

  2. Great it was a non-poisonous one. We see them once in a few years here too…and I am happy with that frequency šŸ™‚ I hope your week is sunny and warm. Hugs!

  3. What a neat looking snake! Choppy has yet to really interact with one – even though we have been places with many, many snakes. I don’t know if she can’t smell them or what, she just seems to ignore them.

  4. Mags and Chancy and Pooh?…so glad to see you. I think we have lost you along the way, but we’re glad you’re back šŸ™‚ Pawkisses for a Happy Furriday šŸ™‚ ā¤

  5. What a beautiful snake, Mags. We love your attitude about letting them be there in your yard. Good idea to put Chancy in the fenced off yard, because I’m sure he is fast enough to catch a snake!

  6. What a beautiful snake! Our Mama would have wanted to pick it up but she would never want to keep it as a pet! Wild thing should be kept in the wild šŸ™‚

  8. I haven’t seen one in a long time also. I do let them live and do their magic with rodents and just protect the bird nest boxes from them as they do like eggs and baby birds.

    1. Yes, they do like eggs and baby birds. I let all stay in my yard that are not poisonous…those I have to have someone relocate. Don’t want Chancy or me getting bit.

  9. we had black and white king snakes but I have not seen a specled one like this. he is beautiful. we had them in GA but not here, but we do love our rodent eating black racers.

  10. Yes I would not keep a snake as a pet. They take a lot of care and cleaning for them to stay healthy. I’m glad you see the value. If course I would feel different about having a rattler in the back yard. šŸ™‚

    1. I haven’t seen a garter snake since I was a child. We used to pick them up and play with them. I thought the information from the link was very informative and like you I also thought it was interesting.

  11. We live near a creek and I’m always fretful about poisonous snakes finding their way into the yard. Poor little Bella had her shots today and she is not feeling well. I’m keeping a watch on her. Love your posts, Sis. Hugs for you and nose kisses for Chancy Man and Pooh ā¤

    1. I don’t like the poisonous snakes hanging out in my yard. Now that I have seen this snake I will be keeping a closer eye on the yard. I sure don’t want Chancy coming in contact with a copperhead or other poisonous snake. Oh, so sorry sweet little Bella is not feeling well after the shots. Prayers that she feels better very soon. I am happy you enjoy my posts sweet Sis. Thank you for the hugs and nose kisses we love and appreciate them. Hugs and nose kisses for all there from all of us. ā¤

  12. WOW! I have never seen a snake like this. I’m used to seeing garter or gopher snakes, tho. Rattlesnakes lived in the foothills around me, but I never saw one come down into the valley where I lived. I do not like snakes, but I’m thankful for the job they do to keep check of the mice and rat population. Thank you for sharing, Sis šŸ™‚

    1. I don’t know why but this is the first snake I have seen in my yard in several years. I was glad to see this one, they are helpful and not harmful. We used to see lots of copperheads in the yard…now those I do not like hanging around. I haven’t seen one though for a long time now. I just as soon the poisonous snakes not hang out in my yard. The helpful non-poisonous are welcome as long as they don’t let Chancy see them. I don’t want him catching snakes. You are welcome, thank you for commenting Sis. ā¤
